THE BEYOND BAMBOO FOUR PILLARS AND HOW YOUR BUSINESS CAN BENEFIT FROM BEING ASSESSED

There is a growing concern in society regarding climate change and the environment. Businesses everywhere are having to change and adapt to meet the wants and needs of their customers. This means that there is a demand for green credentials of services and products and people are more eco-conscious than ever before.

Is your hospitality business designed and strategised to be both economically and environmentally viable? Beyond Bamboo's Four Pillars assessment criteria will help your organisation understand why, where, and how it can implement change, helping you prosper in today's marketplace.

The Four Pillars are the foundation of our consultancy service:

PILLAR 1 - PLANET

ENSURING ENVIRONMENTS AND HABITATS CAN FLOURISH

Protecting our planet and every creature that inhabits it by ensuring that every effort has been taken to make sure that products do no harm to our environment.

PILLAR 2 - PEOPLE

CREATING PROSPEROUS SUPPLY CHAINS THAT NOURISH MANKIND

A company ethos that supports and nourishes its people throughout the supply chain ensuring that life is fair and worthwhile for every human being involved.

PILLAR 3 - PROJECTS

SUPPORTING CAUSES THAT CREATE HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Investing in our communities by supporting causes or creating projects that enable the world to go beyond survival and thrive.

PILLAR 4 - PROGRESSION

INNOVATING A FUTURE THAT IS PROSPEROUS FOR EVERYONE

Planning innovations, products, and practices for a future that goes beyond sustaining and reimagines a future that restores, creates, and cares.

As you navigate the process of becoming a more sustainable hotel, there are questions that you may have as well as set ideas around what it means to switch to more sustainable products.

The price has always been a leading factor in decision making but let’s look at the bigger picture. The question to ask is: Why are you making the switch? Is it to be a better hotel for the planet and people? Is it due to customer demand? Is it to make better planet conscious decisions and be the pioneers leading the way? It could be one, or all, or many more reasons.

There are two things that you should think about when making those choices:

  1. Reduce waste: Do you even need the product? What are you switching it for? Is it replacing a must have item or will customers understand if it is provided on a ‘requested’ basis only? Of course, this varies from one hotel to another depending on expectations. Asking the question would definitely help to educate.

  2. Think circular: What is going to happen to the product at the end of its life? For example, the humble bamboo toothbrush. Are the bristles going to be removed when it is put in the bin for recycling? If something is biodegradable, is it going into the correct recycling facility to allow it to biodegrade or is it sitting under a pile of rubbish in a landfill where the item does not break down? How can the 'waste' become the raw materials for the manufacture of another product?

These two questions will help with your budgeting too. You may find you have products that are 'nice to have' but no longer needed, creating a saving and produces less waste. This gives you extra in the budget to put towards more sustainable and planet conscious products for your hotel. Sometimes, the price of these products can be the same, sometimes higher, and sometimes even cheaper.

It takes an innovative and creative approach to become pioneers in what still is a new area for hotels. But the main thing to remember is that you are on a journey; to educate, to work towards becoming a planet conscious hotel and to make a change in the world.

We take your organisation through a process to determine where you are at in terms of Planet, People, Projects and Progression (as outlined above), this gives us the opportunity, with you, having understood your mission, values, and business goals, to highlight first steps for sustainable business change and then detailed strategy going forward.

There is a 'Working Towards' as well as a 'Fully Assured' because even if they are working towards, it's really important for people to take those first steps.” Ursula Morgan, Managing Director, Beyond Bamboo.

You can rest assured that we have done the same assessment on every seller and supplier that you will find in our bespoke procurement catalogues. A bonus is that we will seek out products and services to fit your requirements which are as local to you as possible, always striving to lower your carbon footprint as well as help you to support the businesses and economies local to you.
